Spring Awakens Miracles
Happy second day of Spring. A season of awakening and rebirth. After my first “real” winter back in the Mitten State, I feel even greater awe at nature’s ability to spring forth new life from what was once frozen water, hard ground, and empty flower beds.
I’m still bunkered down at sister’s cabin in Northern Michigan. Watching earth absorb snow as it melts under sunshine and warmth. Observing big ice floes break apart from shoreline and float downstream.
The more I pay attention, the more I notice. I spot arrival of first robin and caterpillar in yard. So far, the two haven’t spotted each other. Chickadees call to each other, I listen. Sunlight appears through cedars, I watch. Mother Nature is teaching me spiritual lesson of allowing my inner nature to take her natural course when I experience change.
Watching nature awaken after subzero temps, scarce daylight, frozen ponds, and feet of snow is truly a miracle being unveiled. Earlier this morning, as I walked my dog Machi on riverbank, I reflected on words that describe spring.
Awakening. Blossom. Warming up. More lighter days. Melting. Plant seeds. New season. Time of rebirth. Miracles of life.
These descriptions of springtime are the actions and qualities of nature as she enters a new season. According to Ayurveda, when the relationship between the Macro (nature) and the micro (individual) is in sync and harmonious, one enjoys greater health, wellbeing, ease, vitality, and creative energy.
A change of seasons is perfect time to reflect on one’s daily self-care routines and spiritual practices. And, create a plan (dinacharya) to release old thoughts, change food menu, and do spring cleaning to release kapha dosha’s heavy quality in digestive and respiratory system.
Mother Nature teaches me about adapting to change with grace. And navigating new life season with clarity and ease.
Nature is my meditation mat. She’s a living prayer. My church, complete with birdsong choir. A school of life.
I believe, based on surviving several huge life changes over past three years (job loss post wildfire, moving from Santa Barbara home after mudslide, and leaving California for Michigan), that Mother Nature helps me better navigate through personal change of seasons. Like the seasons of a job, financial loss, pandemic, hometown, and shelter.
Like right now, I live in this wonderful cabin in the woods. As of April 30, I need to find another space to live. When fear threatens my peace of mind, I turn to nature, knowing she can help me return to my heart space. Rooted in my heart, it’s easier to remain aligned with faith and possibility. Nature always provides perfect examples of sustainability and support.
Reflecting on nature’s springtime qualities and actions, I wonder how I can weave her innate wisdom and eternal magic into my daily routines.
This is what she taught me today:
🌞 Springtime awaken. Wake up with the birds. This means an earlier to bed time. Easy way to support sweet slumber and awaken with more physical and mental energy.
🌸 Blossom more first drafts of wellness articles, inspirational stories, and little poems. Watching daffodil leaves sprout remind me to honor creative stages. Sprout a first draft now, edit later.
🔥 Warming up. Caught myself recently cold-shouldering a business/personal growth opportunity because I was shackled to old thoughts. I’m now warming up re: how I share skills and services with others. What new career/personal growth opportunities can you warm up to?
💡More lighter days. Quoting my favorite Zen master, Bill Murray, from movie Stripes: “Lighten’ up Francis”. I tend to be way hard on myself. Doing Bellows Breathe helps me lighten up and escape Ego mind’s expectation. Breath how-to in🔗.
💦 Melting. Snow melt allows ground to soften, so bulbs, seeds and dormant plans have easier time sprouting through ground. A good cry helps me release emotions blocking mental focus and creative flow. According to Ayurveda, crying and breathing are vacuum cleaner of emotions, removing stagnant energy from vital organs, systems, and subtle body.
💬 Plant seeds. Jot down ideas and inspirations today, instead of traditional to-do list. Instead, write down how you want to feel now, today, and this week. These subtle seeds, when planted in mind help welcome Universal energies that always and in all ways support dream and goal manifestation.
👗 New Season. Here in Michigan, I’m packing up snowpants and wool mittens. Folks naturally change wardrobe for new season. What are you wearing, as in another’s responsibility, that now feels out of season.
🦋 Rebirth. In early spring, Insect, flowers, and trees, leave their dormant period. Invest time each day to observe miracle of nature resurrecting of new life. This is the same creative energy within you. Access it through spiritual practices like prayer, meditation, or watching the birds and bugs in your yard.
💖 Miracles of Life. Smile at stranger in grocery store. Tell your child, spouse, or sibling your favorite thing about them. Look in mirror and say, “I love you”. Then, observe a miracle come to life.
As COVID shifts into a new phase and folks bunker down, remember that a rejuvenating spiritual retreat can be just outside your front yard. Or, if you live in apartment complex, just around the corner in nearest greenspace.
